How I prepare for a show
The time has come: in 2 days I go to The Malthouse Gallery @ The Town Mill in Lyme Regis to hang my work for a group show, VIEWPOINTS.
As a collaborative venture, you never know how well things will go in terms of hanging the work and all feeling like you have the space you need etc. One or two are people I have never met! The show was arranged by a friend, Charles, who has many artist connections and invited myself and husband Guy to join the group. I’m always up for an exhibition at this gallery as it’s a special space and work always looks amazing in there.
The run up to such a show is usually months- Will I have enough work? Will the paintings look lost on such expansive walls? Only time will tell. If I know which wall of the space I am inhabiting, I like to do a mock up of the wall to scale like this:
Whether it goes up like this remains to be seen but it’s a start!
I also have to consider Fine Art Prints- I currently have about 8 designs in 2 sizes so that needs to be organised. I have to liaise with my lovely printer in Hawkchurch, buy the backboards, the cello bags, make price labels and mount the prints. Next are small original pieces at a lower price point. I always make sure I have a good range of price points from £2.95 for a card all the way up to £600.00 for a painting and everything in between!
Visitors to Lyme Regis often want an affordable item to take home and that’s why I always sell prints and cards at my shows.
My studio is a hive of industry and mess but thats how I roll!
If you’d like to ask me a question or engage in some casual chat, I’m always here ( mostly! ) Tell me what you are interested in finding out about. You never know, it could end up being a blog subject 🙂
