6 week Landscape Painting Course
Twice a year I run a 6 week course called Landscape Painting for beginners and improvers and places are limited to just 3 or 4 people
Why is this?
I like to give my students undivided attention and support them along the way. This is impossible in large groups and people often feel left out and don’t want to bother the tutor. With a small group, you will get all the help you need and not have to wait.
There is plenty of space in my studio to work comfortably and the conversation flows easily. A nice cuppa and some cake helps things along nicely!
What will I learn?
We start by getting to know acrylic paints and colour mixing. There are lots of fun exercises to help us to get started.
We begin by helping you to select a landscape photograph you love, using it as the starting point for learning how to create a strong composition. You'll discover how to use focal points, simplify a scene, eliminate visual clutter and design a painting that is both balanced and engaging.
Working on a 30 x 40cm wood panel, we'll build your acrylic landscape over several weeks using a layered approach. Along the way you'll learn blending techniques, glazing, brush handling, colour mixing, tonal values, colour palette choices, and how light and shadow create depth, atmosphere and the ‘essence’ of place.
As your painting develops, we'll add detail and texture while exploring perspective, edge control and the finishing touches that bring a landscape to life. You'll also learn how to analyse your own work, identify what's not working, make confident corrections, and develop the skills to improve every painting you create.
We'll cover the different types of brushes, suitable materials, varnishing and framing your finished artwork, giving you the knowledge to confidently complete and display your painting.
Acrylic painting is very different from watercolour, so if you have experience with that medium, be prepared to think in a completely new way and discover the wonderful versatility of acrylics.
This 6 week course is fun, informative, creative and very satisfying. Read the testimonials at the end of this page to get an idea of how much you will benefit from this course.

What People Are Saying
“I started the course with Jools feeling rather inadequate and convinced that I could not paint. Right from the start she encouraged me to play, to explore and experiment and to make my own judgments about what I liked - or didn't like.
— Kath
“Jools’ landscape art class has been both inspirational and fun. It has given me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and use mediums and techniques I have never used before. Jools is a wonderful teacher, practical, knowledgeable and highly skilled. She’ll give you the tools, all you need is the imagination. We have learned so much and created some great pieces of work. I can’t wait to see what we will produce next term. Thank you Jools!”
— Mel
“Art with Jools was a joy … as a total beginner with zero creative talent I enjoyed the way the course built up technique each week and am delighted with what I was able to achieve under her guidance. Jools has a lovely, calm, encouraging manner and her studio provides the perfect setting - I thoroughly recommend it!”
